I think it means that mackenna's powers only work if she is understanding that a animal is trying to tell her something like it runs in front of her and stares at her it's probely when she possesses her powers.
i think this means that McKenna can only use her powers if she believes she has the powers and if she doesn't believe she has the powers she can't use her powers. almost as if she doesn't have her powers when she doesn't believe in it.
